🧵 Skill Levels

🟢 Beginner

Perfect for first-time sewists.

This level is for you if:

  1. You have never used a sewing machine, or have only tried once or twice.
  2. You’re unsure how to turn a machine on, thread it, or wind a bobbin.
  3. Terms like presser foot, tension, stitch length, or seam allowance feel unfamiliar.
  4. You have little to no experience with fabric types, grainlines, or cutting patterns.
  5. You want step-by-step guidance and a slow, supportive pace.
  6. You prefer clear demonstrations before trying anything yourself.

In a Beginner workshop, you will learn:

  • Basic machine setup and safety
  • Threading and bobbin winding
  • Straight stitching fundamentals
  • Simple seam construction
  • Confidence operating a machine

👉 If you’re unsure — and feel slightly nervous — Beginner is likely right for you.

🟡 Intermediate

For confident home sewists ready to level up.

This level is for you if:

  1. You can confidently thread a home sewing machine and wind a bobbin without help.
  2. You know how to change presser feet and adjust basic settings.
  3. You understand seam allowances and can sew straight, consistent seams.
  4. You’ve completed a few small projects (e.g., tote bags, simple garments, alterations).
  5. You are comfortable troubleshooting small issues (thread tension, needle changes).
  6. You may have used a straight-stitch machine but have little or no experience with a serger.

In an Intermediate workshop, you can expect:

  • Faster pacing than beginner level
  • More technical construction techniques
  • Introduction to serging and finishing methods
  • Greater independence during build stages

👉 If you already sew at home and feel comfortable operating a machine independently, this is likely your level.

🔵 Advanced

For experienced sewists seeking professional techniques.

This level is for you if:

  1. You confidently use both a straight-stitch machine and a serger.
  2. You understand stitch types, seam finishes, and garment structure.
  3. You can independently read and follow sewing patterns.
  4. You’ve sewn multiple garments and feel comfortable handling heavier fabrics.
  5. You may have used industrial machines (e.g., bartack, coverstitch, walking foot).
  6. You can troubleshoot most machine issues without assistance.

In an Advanced workshop, expect:

  • Minimal foundational instruction
  • Faster workflow
  • Precision techniques (topstitching, structural reinforcement, finishing details)
  • More autonomy and technical depth

👉 If you rarely need help operating machines and want refinement rather than fundamentals, this level is for you.
